Proprietary Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology is at the heart of Sasol's innovative advances into new frontiers.
With the start-up of Oryx GTL in Qatar, Sasol now operates three proprietary and distinct types of FT processes, namely; Low temperature cobalt, for Oryx GTL
fuels production; Low temperature iron, for Sasolburg wax and chemicals production; and High temperature iron, for Secunda fuels and chemicals production.
Research & development
Scientists at Sasol are actively involved in supporting the existing operations and are also hard at work looking at future generation catalysts which have improved performance.
Our separation technologies have enabled us to become an international marketer of 1-pentene, 1-hexene and 1-octene. These technologies have also
generated a phenols and cresols business with excellent potential for growth.
Sasol's coal gasification activities have a rich history spanning over five decades. Its technological achievements include the design, engineering and
commissioning of the Dakota Gasification company facility in the United States where Substitute Natural Gas is produced from lignite.
The company has long realized that technology advantage is critical to business growth. For this reason, it strives to achieve technology leadership and remains committed to reaching new frontiers through innovation.
Making cleaner fuels
Since it began using synthetic fuels, Sasol has been able to make cleaner liquid fuels. Its diesel, produced through gas-to-liquids and coal-to-liquids
technologies, has low sulphur and low emissions. FT technology requires the removal of sulphur from the syngas before synthetic fuels can be produced.
