Explosion at Sasol Polymers' Ethylene plant in Secunda

1 September 2004

Sasol regrets to announce that five people lost their lives and many people were injured in an explosion that occurred at 09:40 at the Polymers Ethylene plant in Secunda. Sasol extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and its sympathy to the injured people and their families.

The total number of injured people has still not been confirmed. They have been treated for major and minor injuries and some have been transferred to the Highveld Medi Clinic. At this time, some people are not accounted for and the emergency services are continuing to sweep the area.

The Ethylene plant is currently undergoing planned maintenance and several contracting firms were on site during the incident.

Indications are that the incident was caused when a gas cloud, due to a gas leak, ignited.

The emergency response was effective and within minutes the fire was extinguished, the gas cloud brought under control and people were moved to a safe location.

The ethylene plant is part of Sasol Polymers' chemicals production and does not affect fuel production.

The Department of Labour is involved with Sasol in investigating the incident.

We will issue more information as it becomes available.
