ethanol

Also known as ethyl alcohol, ethanol is a two carbon alcohol traditionally produced by fermentation of material such as corn, grapes or sugar residues.

Synthetic ethanol is exactly the same molecule but is derived from the chemical reacting of ethylene and water, and as a co-product of Sasol's Fischer-Tropsch process.

Denatured and undenatured high purity ethanol is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, toiletries and surgical procedures, as well as by the flavours, fragrances, aerosols, chemical intermediates and printing inks sectors. Sasol solvents produces ethanol in South Africa (Germiston and Secunda) and Germany (Herne).

High purity ethanol is also known as ethyl alcohol. As with C3 and other chemicals, ethanol is a component of the Fischer Tropsch stream. Ethanol remained exclusively in Sasol's chemical pool until the early 1990s when we built assets to extract a crude form of ethanol, called fuel ethanol. Our future focus will be in adding fermentation ethanol to existing market offerings.
