The town of Secunda is situated in the coalfields of the Mpumalanga province in South Africa, 140km from Johannesburg.
The fertiliser business produces nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, limestone ammonium nitrate (LAN), ammonium sulphate and a range of liquid and granular NPK blends at its site in Secunda.
Sulphuric acid purchased by Sasol Synfuels is processed with ammonia to produce crystalline ammonium sulphate. Most of it is supplied as fertiliser to customers in the agricultural industry. Ammonium sulphate is a preferred source of nitrogen and sulphur for many agricultural applications due to its high solubility and other technical characteristics. Ammonium sulphate is also used for various industrial processes.
The bulk of the ammonium nitrate produced is converted to limestone ammonium nitrate (LAN). Sasol Nitro is currently in the final stages of constructing a new 400 000 ton per annum LAN plant. LAN is considered one of South Africa’s preferential sources of Nitrogen fertiliser for crops, pastures and for most other agricultural products.
All fertiliser products are registered according to The Fertilisers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act,1947 (Act 36 of 1947).

The Polymers business operates a polypropylene plant, a combined ethylene cracking and separation plant and an ethylene/ethane separation plant. The ethane is cracked at two other units on the Secunda site.
Solvents operates twelve plants. The primary function is to remove non-acid chemicals (NAC's) from synthol tail gas wash water and to separate them into marketable products. The process units focus on alcohol recovery, carbonyl recovery and acid recovery, and primary separation, as well as the manufacture of ethyl acetate, high purity ethanol, n-propanol and comonomers are also produced, including 1-hexene and 1-octene which are extracted from SLO (Synthol Light Oil).
Carbo-tar facility produces raw tar and carbon products and boasts the country's first integrated delayed coker and calciner for coking feedstocks. These are converted into liquid fuels and high quality calcined coke products. The plant also has the flexibility to vary the product mix according to market demand.
