conditions of entry
Entrants are expected to take careful note of the following conditions.
Non-compliance will result in disqualification.
who may enter:
- Emerging artists who are 18 years and older who have not yet held a *solo exhibition except for academic purposes.
*solo exhibition: a body of work of at least 20 works in a commercial gallery
- Only artists who are permanent residents in South Africa may participate in the competition.
- All entries must be accompanied by the following documentation:
- A completed and signed entry form.
- A copy of the artist's identity document.
- A biography of no longer than 250 words.
- A conceptual statement/synopsis of no longer than 250 words that outlines the central idea of the work.
- Assembly, maintenance and disassembling instructions (if applicable).
which works may be entered:
- An artist may only enter two works.
- Only original works may be entered. An entry is considered to be an artistic product of an individual. No group entries will be allowed.
All works should be the original artistic creation of the participating artist.
- A single work with all its components may not exceed 250cm x 250cm x 250cm in any direction.
- Entries in any medium may be entered.
- In accordance with international museum regulations, works may not be dangerous or potentially dangerous, nor shall they be of a nature
that may cause injury or damage to persons or property.
- Works must be of such a nature that they can be easily packaged, transported and exhibited. The selection panel and/or organisers reserve
the right to refuse works that are difficult to hang, install or handle.
- Performance art may be entered.
The artist must submit a written proposal to explain his/her performance. This proposal must reach the Association of Arts Pretoria not later than
Friday, 22 June 2012. It must be posted to PO Box 17053, Groenkloof, 0027, or emailed to artspta@mweb.co.za, or delivered to 173 Mackie Street,
Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria. Once the proposal is accepted the artist is expected to conclude a contract with the organisers. Any artist who does not
abide by the rules of this contract before as well as during the exhibition, will be excluded from participating in all future Sasol New Signatures
art competitions or events.
- Installations may be entered by a detailed photographic proposal.
preparation of works:
- Incomplete works will not be accepted.
- The artist's name, address and telephone number, as well as the title, medium and selling price of the work must be clearly written on the
back of a two dimensional work, or on the base of a three dimensional work. The top end of the work must be indicated by an arrow to avoid
uncertainty and errors.
- No Prestik, nails, staples or double-sided tape may be used to attach works to the walls and no drilling will be permitted for the hanging
of any work. Only the Pretoria Art Museum's official rod system may be used to hang works.
- All works for hanging must be properly framed or stretched on a sturdy stretcher frame. Works on paper must be properly mounted and framed.
Paintings and works on paper must be supplied with two 10mm screw eyes and hanging wire. These must be attached to the vertical sides at about a
quarter of the full length from the top of the work. Original block mounted works will be accepted only if the screws and hanging wire are attached.
Unframed works will not be accepted unless full instructions and all materials are supplied. If works are of such a nature that they do not require
framing, full mounting instructions must be supplied. Tapestries, quilts, etc. must be supplied with a strong rod or slat sewn to the work.
- The weight of a work hanging on a wall may not exceed 30kg. A work hanging from the roof may not weigh more than 10kg. Should such a work
consist of several pieces, the total weight per piece is limited to 10kg.
- Works comprising of several parts must be installed by the artist and must be accompanied by simple assembly and disassembling instructions
(the artist must also be contactable to assist if necessary).
- The artist is responsible for maintaining his/her work during the exhibition, should special maintenance be required.
- Electronic devices must be in a good and working condition. Electronic devices that are not in a working condition will be removed from the
exhibition.
- Delicate or fragile works must be clearly indicated as such and installed by the artist.
- Sculptures must be able to stand firmly and must be stable.
- Videos/DVDs must not be longer than five minutes (300 seconds).
- Screening equipment for preliminary selection at the collection point must be supplied by the artist. Artists must provide all technical
equipment (i.e. electrical plugs, extension cords, television monitors, video/DVD players, etc) if this is required for the works.
- The organisers will supply one DVD player and screen on which all selected videos or DVDs will be shown during the final exhibition in
Pretoria. The material will be copied onto one disc for sequential showing on a screen. The organisers will arrange to have VHS entries converted to
DVD for showing at the final exhibition - copyright of the material will remain vested with the artist.
- The artist is responsible for providing video and electronic equipment that forms part of an installation. Detailed instructions must be
supplied by the artist.
- If images of anyone under 18 are submitted the artist must obtain the written consent of that child's parent or guardian. Written consent
must also be obtained from any individuals aged 18 or over who are identifiable in an image. It is the artist's responsibility to ensure that the
necessary consent has been obtained. A model release is provided in the entry form for this purpose and must be submitted with the competition
entry.
- The works must be for sale and can only be purchased on the opening night of the exhibition after Sasol has exercised its option to
purchase.
- Works must not be older than one year and may not have been entered for any other competitions (whether selected or rejected).
- Copyright of works remains vested with the artists / successors in title. Sasol and the Association of Arts Pretoria reserve the right to
utilise the imagery royalty free for non-commercial purposes such as for promotional and academic purposes. Artists will be notified in such
eventuality.
- Selected works must be available until Sunday, 30 September 2012.
The top 7 works must be available for at least 12 months.
dispatch:
- The collection points will not phone artists to inform them on the outcome of the selection. Artists must go to the selection
point where the work was submitted to enquire whether the submission was selected or not
- Works which were not selected must be collected from the collection point where it was entered, on the following dates:

Please note: Works not collected on the specified dates will be disposed of.
- The organisers have agreed to transport the works selected in Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban, Nelspruit, Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and
Mthatha to the Pretoria Art Museum.
- Artists who have entered in Johannesburg whose works were selected must deliver their works to the Pretoria Art Museum, corner of Schoeman
and Wessels Streets, Arcadia Park, Pretoria, on Tuesday, 17 July 2012 between 10:00 and 16:00.
- Final judging will take place on Wednesday, 8 August 2012.
- Artists based in Johannesburg and Pretoria must collect their works from the Pretoria Art Museum on Tuesday 4 October 2011 between 10:00
and 16:00.
- Works from Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban, Nelspruit, Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and Umtata may be collected from the entry points where
the works were submitted. Artists will be notified when the works can be collected.
risk:
- Although works will receive professional care and the usual and reasonable safety precautions will apply, the organisers will
take no responsibility for damage or loss of works.
- Artists may arrange for insurance themselves.
selection and winning choices:
The Sasol New Signatures art competition is judged in two rounds.
- The first round is conducted at the respective regional collection points. The regional committees select a total of around 100
works for exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. The committees comprise of three judges and the national chairperson of the competition, who has
the casting vote. Works that are not suitable are eliminated, which may include those that do not comply with entry requirements show inadequate
craftsmanship or are not ready for exhibition.
- The second round of judging takes place at the Pretoria Art Museum once the exhibition, which includes all the regionally selected works,
has been hung. The final selection panel, comprising five judges, chooses the winners. Works are judged individually based on the concept, use of
material, quality of craftsmanship and skill demonstrated.
- The judges' decision is final and no correspondence with the organisers/judges will be allowed.
- It is in the sole and final discretion of the organisers/judges to cancel any entry on the grounds of illegality, infringement of any third
party rights, or a transgression of the constitutional right of freedom of expression.
