Board risk training constitutes a vital element of proficient corporate governance, encompassing the provision of education and training to board members on diverse facets of risk management and oversight. Its purpose is to enrich directors' comprehension of the organization's risk landscape, potential threats confronting the enterprise, and the board's responsibility in mitigating and controlling such risks. This comprehensive training encompasses domains such as risk identification, evaluation, monitoring, and reporting, along with regulatory compliance and the monitoring of emerging risk trends. By equipping board members with the requisite expertise and proficiencies, board risk training fosters a culture of risk awareness, bolsters decision-making processes, and fortifies the board's capacity to deliver effective oversight and guidance in addressing pivotal risks.
Risk training and awareness are diligently conducted in the May or November board cycle each year, for members of the Sasol Ltd Board, tailored to align with our quarterly risk reporting process. Dedicated sessions are scheduled to acquaint new board members with the development and implementation of the Risk Policy, Framework, and Risk Management approach at Sasol. For instance, during the 2023 financial year, comprehensive onboarding training was provided to new board members, encompassing the core elements and fundamental principles of the risk management process. In addition, targeted engagements were held with audit committee members to elucidate the risk approach employed at Sasol, while also reflecting upon our assurance procedures. As an ongoing practice, risk communication to the board is fostered through frequent safety, risk, and compliance moments, heightening risk awareness. On a quarterly basis, articles of interest are shared as part of the committee meeting packs, to keep the directors updated and informed on the latest trends.
