In light of Sasol and its partner’s commitment to Mozambique, the company today held a soil turning for the Nhamacunda Residential Village, a housing village to accommodate employees working at the Central Processing Facility (CPF) and their families. The project will also serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development in the new expansion area of Vilanculo.

Sasol, in collaboration with Companhia Mocambicana de Hidrocarbonetos (CMH) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) is following a phased approach and is on track to deliver the first houses within 2014.

“We are dedicated to infrastructure and skills development in Mozambique and this project is an important part of our investment programme in the country,” said Nolitha Fakude, Sasol Group Executive Director.

“The Nhamacunda Residential Village is a pioneering initiative and showcases the true value of partnerships. We are extremely privileged to be part of this collaborative effort, which serves to further promote infrastructure and social development in the region,” continued Fakude.

“CMH is a shareholder in the UJV and proud to be part of the magnificent Nhamacunda Village initiative as part of our social responsibility,” said Johan Kachamila, CMH Chairman. “The housing project aims to create better housing conditions as well as attracts more Mozambican qualified workers to join the gas project of Pande and Temane, a project which will continue to contribute significantly to the Mozambican economy for years to come,” continued Kachamila.

Sasol aims to change the composition of the staff complement at Sasol’s CPF to comprise predominantly of Mozambican personnel by 2015. The initiative is supported with a training and development programme for Mozambican employees.

Ninety seven houses will be built within the new expansion area of Vilanculo, with the 22 hectare land allowing for additional houses to be built in future.

In line with Sasol’s strategy of creating sustainable legacies, the company and its partners are also looking into ways of supporting the town with additional infrastructure.

The eco-friendly, family orientated village will be constructed using mostly local suppliers and locally produced materials. The complex will also incorporate local Mozambican architecture design elements.

In recent years, Sasol and its partners became involved with several social development initiatives in and around the Vilanculo area, including, the construction and rehabilitation of the Vilanculo football stadium, the installation of gas reticulation systems in partnership with ENH, the upgrading and equipping of schools in the area and the supply of natural gas for electrification of the town.

“We have already seen significant strides made towards social and infrastructure development in and around Vilanculo. Partnerships have been the basis of our growth and success in Mozambique and will continue to implement targeted programmes to help ensure the holistic wellness of employees to benefit both staff and the local community,” she concluded.
