At approximately 14:10 on Thursday, 29 June 2017, a power failure occurred affecting the Sasolburg Operations, Sasol One Site.

Sasol’s emergency protocol was activated and no personnel were affected.

Due to the power failure, it required that the plant be shut down safely. Given the high operating temperatures and pressures of the plant, flaring of process gas is necessary to safely shut down the plant. Through the flaring process, this process gas is turned into carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and particulate matter (smoke).

We have already alerted the relevant authorities to the incident and that an investigation into the cause of the power failure will commence.
