As a company with a proud 70-year footprint in South Africa, Sasol is operating at full capacity to support the global fight against the spread of COVID-19.

Sasol’s products and services, by and large, fall into the designated categories of essential goods and services and Sasol is continuing its operations to ensure safe and reliable supply of chemicals, fuels, and related products and services that will help South Africa and Sasol’s customers make a significant contribution in fighting the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to producing bulk high purity alcohols such as high purity ethanol (HPE), isopropanol (IPA) and n-Propanol (NPA) alcohols, Sasol is now also producing millions of liters of a new alcohol blend for hand sanitiser manufacturing which is available in drums.  This blend will enable existing and new customers to expedite production of hand sanitisers.

Sasol continues to deliver to millions of litres of solvents chemicals to market and our laboratories, production, marketing and supply chain teams are working around the clock to ensure a reliable supply of critical alcohol-based products and related chemicals such as raw material polymers to customers.   Some of the activities include the formulation of the new sanitiser blend, setting up blending facilities, implementing drumming facilities in addition to Sasol’s regular bulk supply, implementing new supply chain channels and supplying new customers in drums.

In addition to alcohol based solvent chemicals used in the production of sanitisers and disinfectants Sasol’s raw material polymers are also used by downstream manufacturers in the fight against COVID-19.

Sasol`s PVC is used in blood bags, medical tubing, some surgical gloves, which are vitally important in our hospitals right now. Sasol`s polypropylene (PP), especially the non-woven products are used for ordinary surgical masks, as well as in coronavirus masks (additional layers to ordinary surgical masks). Staple fiber hair nets and shoe covers for hospitals also made from PP. Sasol`s polyethylene (PE) products are being used in flexible packaging for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) – including bread bags, pasta & rice packaging, form fill and seal (FFS) bags. These are all single use packaging that enables a more hygienic containment of our day-to-day foods.  Sasol`s PE is also used in rotational molded water tanks that are currently being distributed into informal settlements for clean water.

Sasol extends its heartfelt gratitude to its employees and to the thousands of people in South Africa and globally who are operating on the frontlines to serve and protect their communities during the pandemic.  Please stay safe.
